Episode 110 - People Might Think They're Dancing

In this episode I talk about stuff going on in my life (including my desire to get a cat or two), then I bid farewell to Mike Nesmith, review a box of beer, and talk about new music from Floating Points/Pharoah Sanders, Mastodon, Swallow the Sun, Aimee Mann, and Modest Mouse. I had fun with it. Maybe you also will? Why not click the player and find out?

Remember to e-mail me at db@derekbrink.com with questions, comments, and what-have-you--I almost always reply unless you called me something mean!

And here's a bunch of photos!
Here's the cover for the weird folder you've got on your desktop filled with cover photos from Empty Checking, Gary. (This caption should really freak out anyone named Gary.)

Here's the Monkees movie I referenced while I was talking about Mike Nesmith. It's a trip, man.

If you follow me on social media, you probably already saw this, but this is a picture I took of myself the night Mike Nesmith died. I spent the whole night in a knit cap in his honor.

Here are the beers from the Stout Bout box I talk about in the episode.

Schlafly's standard Stout, the Oatmeal Stout.

A strange but interesting beer, the Salted Caramel Stout. It's weird but not in a bad way.

The puzzlingly named Mexican Chocolate Stout, which on the back of the box they describe as an AMERICAN stout, so I don't know. I think they're just trying to avoid telling us that it's named that way because it was developed by one of their Mexican employees that they don't want to get TOO much credit... But hey. It's delicious.

Sorry this photo sucks. The blue label by itself was causing a weird issue where the light reflecting off the bottle was glaring no matter what I did. Which is a pity because this is the best beer in the box and it deserves a much better picture than this!

Here's the Floating Points & Pharoah Sanders record. It's a very different but very cool listen.

Mastodon't "Hushed and Grim" is one of the better metal albums I've bought in a while, and at a hefty 2-discs, that's very good news!

I expected something different from this Swallow the Sun album, but I'm not disappointed. Sorry this picture also kinda sucks. The light in my house is weird. And I'm not a very good photographer.

It shouldn't surprise you to see this on my top ten in a couple weeks. Aimee Mann's "Queens of the Summer Hotel" sits among her best work.

New Modest Mouse is also pretty great. Psychedelia done their way. And I really like their way.
