Episode 117 - Derek Yells About Cats for an Hour

In this (very special?) episode I officially announce that I'm going to be adopting two cats (aka THE BEST BOYS!) and I spend an hour telling you about that journey. Then I also pay tribute to our recently departed musical genius, Mark Lanegan. Dig in. This is a good one! (I also spend a lot of time singing the praises of my friend Kim, who's been fostering my future babies.)

Please check out https://www.tenthlifecats.org/, particularly if you're in the St. Louis area and looking to adopt. They presently have a little sweetheart named Special Agent Gumdrop. TELL ME YOU DON'T WANT TO ADOPT SPECIAL AGENT GUMDROP!!!

Remember that you can e-mail me your questions and comments, if you wanna--db@derekbrink.com.

Time index:

  • 0:00 - Intro, and yelling about cats for pretty much an hour.
  • 55:28 - Music Break - Danielle
  • 55:58 - Rest in Peace, Mark Lanegan
  • 1:10:56 - Music Break - Lonely
  • 1:11:26 - Outro, including yelling at you about Ukraine. There's a lot of yelling in this one.
And here's a few photos:
Here's the cover photo. Fun fact, if you're seeing this, you're among the first to see the cat tree that I bought for the boys. There's another one that's going elsewhere in the house, but this is the one in their room, because of the little basket--they seem to like the little basket on the tree at their foster mom's house. Also there are a bunch of Mark Lanegan related albums in the photo.

I drew this! It's a triptych of me and my boys! I'm not sharing any photos of them until I've signed the adoption papers...but this feels safe. Derek and the Pussycats. D-D-D-Derek and the Cats. Whatever you like. There are my boys, as I saw them in my head.

...and speaking of my head... I posted this on my Facebook with the caption "I've had a couple things on my mind..." I've got a gray guy and an orange boy coming home soon! And they're all I can think about! The only thing keeping me sane is writing about them and drawing them!

And here's a pile of Mark Lanegan albums (and a Queens of the Stone Age album on which he appears). One of the great voices of my generation (or thereabout) silenced too young. A complicated guy. A gloomy trainwreck. A genius. I was deeply saddened by his loss.
